**The Northern Territory has no dedicated territory-level rebate for heat pump hot water systems — but that doesn’t mean NT residents miss out entirely.**
Every homeowner in the NT is entitled to the same **federal government rebate** as the rest of Australia, and the Territory’s climate actually works in your favour when it comes to maximising that incentive.
The Australian Government’s **Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES)** applies nationwide — including the Northern Territory. When you install an eligible heat pump hot water system, your installer generates **Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs)** on your behalf and passes the saving directly to you as an **upfront discount at the point of sale**.
No forms to fill, no rebate to chase. It’s taken straight off your installation cost.
The NT sits in a high climate zone, which means heat pumps here can perform exceptionally efficiently — and that can translate to a **higher STC value** compared to some cooler southern states. The federal rebate on eligible systems typically ranges from **$300 to $700+**, depending on the system’s efficiency rating and tank size.
Heat pump hot water systems work by drawing warmth from the ambient air outside to heat water. The warmer the air, the more efficiently the system operates. In Darwin and across much of the NT, warm temperatures year-round mean your heat pump runs at or near peak efficiency almost every day.
This also means the system delivers **greater energy savings** over its lifetime — which is factored into the number of STCs your installer can generate, potentially increasing your upfront rebate value.
The federal SRES scheme reduces every January 1st and closes entirely in 2031:
| Year | Federal Rebate Value |
|---|---|
| 2026 | Higher |
| 2027 | Lower |
| 2028 | Lower again |
| 2031 | Scheme ends completely |
Installing in 2026 locks in the strongest available rebate.
A heat pump hot water system uses up to 75% less electricity than a standard electric storage tank. In a warm climate like the NT’s, where systems operate at high efficiency year-round, the ongoing energy savings are among the best achievable anywhere in Australia — often up to $400 per year or more on hot water costs alone.
To qualify for the federal STC rebate:
– The system must be on the Clean Energy Regulator’s approved products register
– Tank capacity must be 425 litres or under
– Must be installed by a licensed plumber
– Must be a new installation or like-for-like replacement at the same address
Your installer will confirm eligibility and take care of the STC process as part of the installation.
