Tasmanian Homeowners: The Federal Rebate For Heat Pump Hot Water is Available to You Too

Tasmania doesn’t have a dedicated state rebate for heat pump hot water systems — but every Tasmanian homeowner is still entitled to the federal government incentive that applies across the country.

It’s one of the most overlooked rebates in the state. Here’s everything you need to know.

The Federal Rebate: How It Works

The Australian Government’s **Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES)** applies to all states and territories, including Tasmania. When you install an eligible heat pump hot water system, your installer generates **Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs)** on your behalf and passes the value directly to you as an **upfront discount at the point of sale**.

No applications, no waiting, no paperwork on your end. The saving comes straight off your installation quote.

For Tasmanian homeowners, the federal STC rebate on a heat pump hot water system typically ranges from $300 to $700, depending on the system’s efficiency rating, tank capacity, and your postcode zone.

Why Act Now — Not Later

The SRES scheme is winding down year by year. Every January 1st the government reduces the deeming period, which determines how many STCs your system can earn:

Year	Federal Rebate Value
2026	Higher
2027	Lower
2028	Lower again
2031	Scheme ends completely

Installing in 2026 gives you the best available federal rebate. Every year you wait, the discount gets smaller.

Is There Any Additional Tasmanian Support?

Tasmania’s **Energy Saver Loan Scheme** offers a low-interest loan for a range of energy efficiency upgrades including hot water systems. While it’s not a direct cash rebate, it can help manage the upfront cost of installation if you prefer to spread the payment.

The Long-Term Saving

A heat pump hot water system uses up to **75% less electricity** than a conventional electric storage tank — and in Tasmania, where many homes still rely on electric resistance heating for hot water, that saving is particularly significant. Most households can expect to reduce their hot water energy costs by up to **$400 per year**.

Combined with the federal upfront rebate, the payback period on a quality heat pump system is typically between **3 and 6 years**.

Is Your System Eligible?

To qualify for the federal STC rebate:

– The system must be on the Clean Energy Regulator’s approved products register
– Tank capacity must be 425 litres or under
– Must be installed by a licensed plumber
– Must be a new installation or like-for-like replacement at the same address

Your installer will confirm eligibility and manage the STC paperwork as part of the installation process.
